Nora and Atlantic Brugman were born and raised in Barcelona, Spain to an American father and a Spanish mother. They first set foot on a boat at the ages of 3 and 4 when their father bought a wooden Optimist and brought it to the beach. Their father would swim behind the boat as the sisters took turns skippering. Soon after, they started competing in the Optimist class in events all around the world. Growing up, they spent their summers visiting their family in the U.S. and would take the opportunity to compete in regional and national events. After aging out of the Optimist class, they teamed up to sail together in the 420 class. For three years, they competed in European and World Championships representing both Spain and the United States.
After high school, Atlantic attended Connecticut College where she focused on college sailing. Nora moved on to Olympic sailing and began training in the 470 class for the 2016 Olympics. She narrowly missed qualifying for Spain.
After 7 years of pursuing their own sailing, they have once again joined forces to compete in the 470 class with the goal of representing the United States at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
